As we celebrate our 61st year of freedom, it is important to note that we can do more to help our nation be cleaner and greener. We surely have a long way to go. We asked a few Ugandans what they thought we should change about our environment for the better. One comment from Josephine clearly stood out below:
It simply takes common sense, courtesy and consideration. I call them the three 3 C’s. The problem we have as Ugandans is that we lack the three; courtesy in our behaviour and our failure to drop the old habits as we strive to treat our environment. We litter rubbish anywhere, eat from the car and throw trash out our windows. We eat maize through the cob out….at least we have the assurance that it will eventually decay. As the Authority tries to make Uganda a trash-free city, someone elsewhere has no courtesy in their responsibility of maintaining a clean environment.
It is important to have consideration for the Ugandans who clean the roads. To be honest, we wouldn’t need much of that if all Ugandans could consider a practice of trash management. One thing I know is it starts with you and me. Self-management is the best management; considering that someone else has taken time out of their day to clean, one should ask themselves whether littering is the best solution.
Our last C is common sense. It is basically thinking am I doing the right thing? Does this action make the environment beautiful? If there was a way of reminding every Ugandan to have common sense towards the environment and maintenance of its nature, we would all be in a better place.
This presents a challenge for us as Ugandans to do the very best for our environment. Below are a few more responses to help us know where we can improve. What would you do to make our environment s better place today?
Happy Independence Day Uganda!
