Despite the heightened vulnerability they face due to cultural, social, and economic factors, these women are the unsung heroes in the ongoing battle to safeguard our precious environment.
With International Women’s Day around the corner, it’s only befitting that this wee we celebrate a few remarkable women who are leading the charge against climate change through a blend of practical initiatives, policy advocacy, and educational endeavours.
Aidah Nakku is a force to be reckoned with in the Fridays for Future movement, Aidah Nakku is on a mission to educate and empower girls and women. For her, knowledge is the ultimate weapon against the climate crisis. By advocating for increased education for girls, Nakku believes we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better equip women to withstand the impacts of climate shocks.
Hamira Kobusingye’s heart beats for the slums. Hamira Kobusingye witnesses firsthand the devastating effects of climate change on health and livelihoods. Through her resilience and resourcefulness, she helps her community navigate the challenges of extreme weather events and environmental degradation, proving that survival skills are forged in the crucible of adversity.
Sostine Namanya works as a Gender Officer for an environmental NGO, Sostine Namanya is dedicated to amplifying the voices of women in the fight against climate change. Recognising the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on women, especially in rural areas, Namanya works tirelessly to empower women to assert their rights and advocate for sustainable solutions.
Evelyn Acham is the co-founder of a burgeoning climate movement, Evelyn Acham refuses to be silenced in the face of adversity. Despite facing arrest and intimidation, Acham remains steadfast in her commitment to raising awareness about the devastating effects of climate change on agriculture and livelihoods in Uganda. Together with her fellow activists, she strives to amplify the voices of African youth on the global stage, igniting a spark of hope in the hearts of millions.
Diana Nabiruma is A fierce climate lobbyist, Diana Nabiruma shines a light on the dark underbelly of Uganda’s oil exploration industry. Concerned by the rising tide of crime and environmental degradation, Nabiruma advocates for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel extraction, urging her fellow citizens to take a stand against the exploitation of their natural resources.
These women are the vanguards of change, leading by example and inspiring us all to take action in the fight against climate change. With their unwavering dedication and indomitable spirit, they remind us that the power to shape our collective destiny lies in our hands.
